There are real haunted places. And there are real ghosts, spirits, wraiths – call them what you will, but anyone who has visited the places on this list will tell you that they are real. Without any doubt. And the people who have been here will not be afraid to say that they were afraid – because these places are downright scary. Read for yourself…

10. Changi Beach, Singapore

People complain that they hear strange crying and screaming in the area. Sometimes, the heads of the Chinese dead bodies are seen flying and headless bodies walk around the beach. The scariest thing is that the ghosts leave blood stains. During nights people observed dug holes that appear as if they were used for burying bodies. Changi Beach in reality served as a killing ground as a part of the Sook Ching massacre by the Japanese during the World War II.

9. Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery, USA

As the name states, only men are buried in this graveyard (not sure if they are actually all unmarried men…). Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery is a small, abandoned cemetery in Chicago. It is well-known for its haunted stories and ghost sightings. There are countless reports of glowing balls, apparitions, squeaks, moans, groans and unexplained noises. According to a legend black magic and occult rituals were practiced in and around the graveyard, hence it is believed that the powers of the occult and the afterlife are very strong in this spot.

8. Monte Cristo, Australia

Monte Cristo, Australia’s most haunted mansion is located in Junee, New South Wales. Monte Cristo is a property located in the town of Junee, New South Wales. Built in 1885, this double story late Victorian manor is claimed to be Australia’s most haunted house, and one of the most hanuted houses in the world. Reports include ghostly figures, strange lights, automatic turning on and off lights, invisible force fields, phantom sounds and animal mutilations. These are attributed to several tragic incidents in the property.
Monte Cristo has had its fair share of tragedy: a maid was pushed to her death here; in a tragic accident, a stable boy was burnt to death; and a maid dropped a little girl down the stairs after being pushed by a “supernatural force”. To add to the drama, the mentally retarded son of a housekeeper had been tied up on a short chain by his mother for more than 30 years and in 1961 the caretaker of Monte Cristo was shot dead by a local inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho.
When present owner Reg Ryan moved into the property in June, 1963, he returned one night to find bright lights streaming out of every doorway and window, this despite the fact they hadn’t yet put the electricity on and owned only one kerosene lamp.

7. Bhangarh Fort, India

The ruins of Bhangarh Fort in the Rajasthan state in India are known for being the most hunted place in south Asia. According to one of the myths, Bhangarh was cursed by Guru Balu Nath (Baba Balanath), who originally sanctioned the construction but warned that his sacred meditating place lies nearby and should the palace reach the size which would cast a shadow big enough to reach his forbidden retreat, the city would fall into ruin. Ignorant of the warning, Ajab Singh – one of dynasty’s descendants raised the palace to a height that cast the shadow on the Balu Nath’s retreat and the city was cursed. There are several other myths and legends that explain the reasons why the fort was abandoned overnight and never re-inhabited, but they all revolve around the fact that the city was cursed and is now haunted by ghosts.
Even the army is scared – The Government of India wanted to put the myth of ghosts haunting the Bhangarh Ruin to rest by deploying the military to patrol the fort at night. However, none of the Indian military personnel dared to participate in this ghost busting operation because the belief that it’s haunted by ghosts is so deep. Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the official government body responsible for maintenance of monuments and ruins throughout the country officially recognizes the Bhangarh Fort as a place haunted by ghosts. Because of that, no accommodation if offered within the ruins and even the office of ASI was built at a safe distance from the fort, instead of within it as is the case of other similar sites.
There are warnings at all entry points to the Bhangarh Fort advising people not to venture into the city at night. Some of the signs posted by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) not only advise against, but literally prohibit visitors from entering Bhangarh Fort at night, stating:

“Entering the borders of Bhangarh before sunrise and after sunset is strictly prohibited.”

If you are a ghost hunter or like visiting mysterious places, especially those known to be haunted by ghosts, then Bhangarh Fort deserves a solid spot on your “Must Visit Before I Die” list.

6. The Screaming Bridge of Maud Hughes Road, USA

Outside of Fairfield on Maud Hughes Road is the legendary Screaming Bridge, where the ghostly echo of a girl’s final scream reverberates through the years. She jumped from a moving car during a heated argument and fell all the way into the river. Sometimes, if you sit still on the bridge, you can hear the dialogue from their last fight. A phantom train also haunts the area. Ghostly figures, mists, black hooded figures, unexplained lights and a phantom train have been reported.

5. Raynham Hall, UK

The famous ghost of this Norfolk, England house is dubbed the Brown Lady. According to stories, she was a lady who was locked in a room and was not allowed to see her children. She eventually died. Her presence is well known as she is seen throughout the house walking the hallways searching for her five children and disturbing all who enter. Separated from her loved ones in life she continues seeking what has been taken from her. She is Dorothy Walpole, also known as The Brown Lady, sister of Robert Walpole, Prime Minister of England in 1722 – and a tortured soul.

4. 50 Berkeley Squares, UK

50 Berkeley Square is a haunted townhouse on Berkeley Square in Mayfair, in Central London. In the 1900s it became known as “The Most Haunted House in London”. The four-storey brick town house was built in the late eighteenth century. and from 1770 to 1827 was the home of British Prime Minister George Canning. Interestingly, the building is thought to be the oldest unaltered building in London.
Legend varies, but mostly states that the attic room of the house is haunted by a spirit of a young woman who committed suicide there. She threw herself from the top floor windows after being abused by her uncle, and is said to be capable of frightening people to death. One, rarer, version of the tale is that a young man was locked in the attic room, fed only through a hole in the door, until he eventually went mad and died.
Several deaths have occurred after people spent the night in the room.
In 1879, Mayfair magazine reported that a maid who had stayed in the attic room had been found mad. On the day she was found, a nobleman purportedly took up the challenge to spend a night in the room, and his was the first death recorded in the house. The coroner pronounced him dead of fright. It is said that after one nobleman had spent the night in the attic room, he was so paralysed with fear that he couldn’t speak. In 1887, sailors from HMS Penelope stayed a night in the house.[6] By morning one was found dead, having tripped as he ran from the house.

3. 112 Ocean Avenue, Amityville USA

This house will be no stranger to people who love horror movies. It is the house on which the film The Amityville Horror is based. The house is a six-bedroom Dutch Colonial style house built in 1924. The best known feature of the house was, at one time, its pair of quarter circle shaped windows on the third floor attic level, which gave it an eerie, eye-like appearance. These windows have since been removed and the house renumbered to keep tourists away.

On November 13, 1974, 23-year old Ronald DeFeo, Jr. fatally shot six members of his family at the house. During his murder trial in 1975, he claimed that voices in his head had urged him to carry out the killings. He was found guilty and is still in jail in New York. In December 1975, George Lutz and his wife, Kathy, purchased the house and moved in with their three children. After 28 days they left the house, claiming to have been tormented by paranormal phenomena while living there. The family experienced foul smells, faces at the windows, screams, moving objects, and all manner of bizarre phenomena. The image above is the house as it appears today.

2. Edinburgh Castle, Scotland

Scotland is said to be the most haunted place in Europe and one of the spots most active for paranormal sightings is Edinburgh Castle. The castle even features a dog cemetery where, naturally, ghost dogs can often be seen. There have been reports of French prisoners from the Seven Years War and colonial prisoners from the American Revolutionary War, a headless drummer, and a piper that can be seen and heard in the castle. Centuries ago the piper was said to have been hired to look into the underground tunnels of the castle. He played his pipe while underground so that those above would know where he was but halfway through his exploration, he vanished.

1. The Tower of London, UK

The Tower is considered one of the most haunted places on Earth. This castle has been witnesses to executions, murders and all manners of treachery and torture for the last thousand years.

The Bloody Tower was the scene of the infamous disappearance of the two princes; Edward V, aged 12, and Richard Duke of York age 10, who are thought to have been murdered in 1483 on the probable command of the Duke of Gloucestershire, who was to be crowned Richard the III. According to one story, guards in the late 15th century, who were passing the Bloody Tower, spotted the shadows of two small figures gliding down the stairs still wearing the white night shirts they had on the night they disappeared. They stood silently, hand in hand, before fading back into the stones of the Bloody Tower. These figures were identified as the ghosts of the two princes. In 1674 workmen found a chest that contained the skeletons of two young children, they were thought to be the remains of the princess, and were given a royal burial not long afterwards.
The story of the little princes is still to this day a heartbreaking story. They are “among the most poignant ghosts” in the Tower of London.

Perhaps the most famous ghosts are the executed wives of Henry VIII, Lady Jane Grey and Ann Boleyn. Both were beheaded. The latter’s ghost has been seen carrying her head. Ghosts have also been spotted depicting the horrible death of the Countess of Salisbury. She was said to have been hacked to death by the axe man when she ran away from the spot where she was to be executed.
